Small in size but full of character, Trichodiadema bulbosum is often called the African Bonsai. This unusual South African succulent develops a thick, bulbous root base and fine, branching stems covered in little fleshy leaves. Given time, its woody-looking base can become a feature in its own right, giving the plant the appearance of a miniature tree.
Plant Details
- Common Name: African Bonsai, Miniature Desert Rose
- Scientific Name: Trichodiadema bulbosum
- Nursery Pot Size: 9cm
- Lighting: Bright light with some gentle direct sun
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry between watering, while giving it more water during active growth
- Growth Habit: Compact, branching succulent with a thickened, tuberous root base
- Leaves: Small, fleshy green to grey-green leaves tipped with tiny bristles that resemble a little crown
- Spines: Not a true cactus. Its leaf-tip bristles give it a distinctive spiky appearance, so handle gently.
- Flowers: Produces daisy-like pink to purple flowers with a yellow centre, usually during the warmer growing months when conditions are suitable.
A Note on Size
The 9cm nursery pot refers to the diameter of the pot, not the height of the plant. This is a naturally slow-growing succulent, and its shape and root development will change over time.
Plant Care
Give your African Bonsai plenty of light and use a free-draining cactus and succulent mix. Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry before watering again. It needs less water during cooler periods, so avoid keeping the soil constantly damp.
With maturity, the swollen root base can become a distinctive feature. Some growers gradually expose more of the base as the plant develops, but avoid disturbing the roots unnecessarily while it is young.
Make It Complete
A shallow pot can complement its miniature tree-like form as it grows. Cactus and succulent potting mix is also available at City Jungle to help provide the drainage it needs.
